100 Years Celebrated at Rodbourne Cheney BC

Friday 12th September

Today, Friends from eleven different counties made their way to Rodbourne Cheney Bowling Club. A few of us missed the turning and had to retrace our route, but thankfully, no one arrived late! We gathered to celebrate the club’s 100th anniversary — a truly special occasion.

President Brian Tuck and Captain Ryan Sawer gave us a warm welcome, despite the ominous forecast. There was much discussion about how much play would be possible, given the persistent rain. Pete was kept busy at the bar, serving lunchtime drinks and keeping spirits high.

Captain Ryan’s energy and organisational skills were evident throughout the day. After the obligatory group photo, the action began. The President formally welcomed us, and team cards were distributed.

Sadly, the rain became relentless and began to affect the green. To add to the drama, Richard Pearce — one of the Friends — took a tumble. With safety in mind, the captains made the decision to halt play. Most rinks managed nine ends, with a few reaching ten or eleven. Despite appearances, the green played better than expected, and the time spent on it, though brief, was thoroughly enjoyed. That said, everyone was quite relieved to escape the downpour!

Jackie, Tina, and Lynn worked tirelessly in the kitchen, surprising us with a professionally presented post-match meal of burgers and chips, followed by trifles — a delightful treat.

President Brian offered closing remarks, wishing all players well. Captain Ryan kindly present Captain of the day Carolyn with a commemorative banner to mark their celebration. The two captains then announced the scores: Rodbourne Cheney emerged victorious with 54–38. Friends had one winning rink — congratulations to Margaret Morris, Vincent Knauss, David Hamilton, and skip Andy Hunt. The top rink for Rodbourne comprised Veto, Julie, Dave, and skip Rob. Both teams’ top rinks were congratulated and awarded accordingly.   Speeches closed with Carolyn presenting President Brian with Friend’s Certificate – a memento of our visit.

Although it was disappointing not to complete a full game, the afternoon was thoroughly enjoyed by all, and we left with smiles on our faces.  Thank you Rodbourne Cheney.

Carolyn Hunt (Buckinghamshire)
