The second of our final three fixtures took place at Marlborough Bowls Club on Saturday, 13th September. With a weather forecast that hinted at the date being an unlucky one, we were relieved to begin play at 2:00pm. Despite intermittent rain prompting a few players to briefly leave the green, we were fortunate to complete the match in full.
The game was closely contested, with the Friends securing a narrow victory: 89–87 and 3.5 rinks to 2.5.
Following the match, we were treated to a superb buffet. Marlborough’s Captain of the Day, Ian, expressed thanks to all involved and shared a brief but engaging history of the club. Neil, Captain of the Day for the Friends, responded with appreciation for the warm hospitality, extending thanks to Ian, Angie and Mike for their assistance at the bar, the catering team, and Nicki for the excellent food.
Neil then announced the match result and presented bottles of wine to Maxeen Fletcher, John Bates, Bryan Haines, and Michael White for achieving top rink. In a light-hearted gesture, the Friends’ losing rink—Lesley Summersgill, Gordon Newman, Steve Gregory, and Adie Booth—each received a Kit Kat, with the suggestion that they “take a break.”

The Friends were represented by members from nine different counties in all.
Marlborough Bowls Club, now in its 91st year, boasts a rich heritage, with reports of a bowling club in the area dating back to the 1600s. We very much look forward to returning in 2034 to help celebrate their centenary.
