Celebrations at Amesbury BC

Sunday 14th September :  Centenary Celebration Match

It was the final game of the season for both ourselves and Amesbury. Most of us arrived at the club around 11:30 in preparation for a buffet at midday. Thanks to the club for a magnificent spread which we all enjoyed. The skies were getting very dark and we expected the rain to appear any minute, and it did. We started the match in light rain but it soon got pretty heavy. We managed to play 12 ends but it was getting a little dangerous on the green so off we came, to the relief of many.

Captain Julie and her husband President Steve, arranged with the kitchen to bring the meal forward, and what a beautiful meal it was. Roast chicken breast with a creamy white wine sauce, Potatoes and vegetables followed by a choice of Gateau or Cheesecake. The Kitchen staff of Lyn, Janice 2, Ro, Teresa, Jackie and head chef Janice really worked hard and did a fantastic job as well as providing the splendid buffet.

The green bowled very well considering the amount of water which fell, so hats off to President Steve who is also the greenkeeper. The match result was a narrow victory to Amesbury, 67 to 61.

Captain Julie receiving Friends Certificate from Captain Paul

Our top rink (5) was Mike Banyard, Anne Perry, Mike Morris and Andy Hunt. Top honours for Amesbury (Rink 6) were Janet, David, Vanessa and Ben. Captain Julie presented a donation of £50 to our Chair Kath Lloyd.  Thank you Amesbury, we will spend it wisely. I presented a Centenary framed certificate to the club to mark our visit.

Jenny & John kept us refreshed from behind the bar and the rain stopped just in time for our departure.

Thank you to everyone involved at the club. A lot of hard work paid off with a very successful event and it rounded off a very enjoyable weekend in Wiltshire.

We had 10 counties represented so a good turnout from the Friends and thanks to those who came in at the last minute to replace unavailable players. See you all next season.

Well done Amesbury, here’s to the next 100.

Paul Robson
Captain of the Day
