Coping with the heat at Thringstone

Saturday 12th July 2025

☀️ On one of the hottest days of the year, Friends gathered at lunchtime at Thringstone Bowling Club, where Secretary Mick Carrington extended a warm welcome. The bar was at the ready, serving a range of cooling refreshments, while club members—some of whom were later to play—generously provided savouries and a splendid assortment of homemade cakes.

👥 Captain of the Day for Friends, John Thompson, took charge of operations, although he would not be playing today. Match planning was expertly handled by Mick, John and Captain Ed, with thoughtful adjustments to suit the conditions: 18 ends were played, with water breaks after the 6th and 9th ends.

🏆 Despite the heat, the competitive spirit remained strong. Friends claimed victory on two rinks, but Thringstone secured the overall win: 105–81. Congratulations to our hosts! Fellowship continued after the match in the spacious Rangers Club next door, where we were treated to a hearty buffet.

🎖️ As tradition dictates, both captains offered thanks and recognition. Captain Ed expressed his appreciation to Secretary Mick Carrington for his dedication and expertise in coordinating the event, while the Friends’ captain congratulated the top rinks from each side:

  • Thringstone (Rink 3): Patrick, Martin, Carl U and skip Carl Wamt
  • Friends (Rink 4): John Scholey, Bryan Robinson, Sue Skerry and skip Andy Hunt

🙏 Profound thanks go to all who contributed to making the day such a success, especially Margaret for tending the bar, and Mick, Sarah, Vicky and others for their tireless support and culinary efforts.

🎉 A splendid afternoon spent in wonderful company—thank you to all at Thringstone Bowls Club

John Thompson
Captain of the Day
