Tuesday 30th May:
This is the first of our games this year in Yorkshire, and taking place at Driffield Bowls Club, we took on the Yorkshire Patrons Bowling Association. As many clubs are, it was beside the local cricket pitch. The Green had its own changing rooms, but with a Clubhouse just 100 meters away. The Friends were welcomed by Stewart Clarke the Patrons Secretary, Alan Smith the Yorkshire Men’s President and Margaret Redhead the Yorkshire Ladies President. The Green was handed over for the game by Alwyn Barron the Past Yorkshire President. Whilst the rest of the country was bathed in sunshine, this eastern part of the UK was overcast, with a cold wind.
The scores on the 5 rinks were close, however the Friends won with a score of 101 – 75 and by 3 rinks to 2. Captain of the day, Neil, managed to jiggle the score so that the result was really a draw! Top rink for the Friends was Rink 3 by 28 – 5. The rink was made up of Lead: Maxeen Fletcher, No 2: Ian Perry, No 3: Addie Lloyd and Skip: Clive Handscombe. The top Rink for the Patrons was Rink 4. Lead: B. Crabtree, No. 2: P Bee, No 3: N Watson and Skip: G Stockton.
We were fed magnificently after the game – chicken in a lovely sauce, with lots of veg, followed by individual trifles – delicious. Following the essential and well deserved thank-yous, the top rinks were congratulated, and Neil also took the opportunity of presenting Leslie Summersgill and Clive Handscombe with their Hot Shot certificates and badges that they had earnt in a previous game at Barnwood. A certificate to remember our visit was presented to the Yorkshire Patrons.
An excellent day enjoyed by all, thank you Patrons.
Neil Fletcher – Captain of the Day
