Friends took no prisoners at Kings Langley

The Friends returned to Kings Langley Bowls Club for their late‑season fixture, having visited early last year to help celebrate the club’s centenary. It was a pleasure to be back, and the weather provided perfect conditions for an enjoyable afternoon of bowling.

Captain of the Day, Carolyn Hunt, was welcomed by Kings Langley Captain Dave.   A brief moment of confusion followed when an unexpected player arrived, but Marcia was able to play on behalf of Carolyn, who remained as non‑playing captain.  It all worked out for the best.

The match began at 2:30pm with the captains’ welcomes, team announcements, and the customary group photograph. From her comfortable vantage point outside, Carolyn enjoyed a clear bird’s‑eye view of the play. It proved to be an excellent match to watch, although Kings Langley found themselves up against determined opposition. The Friends showed no mercy and secured wins on 6 of the 7 all rinks. Carolyn, ever diplomatic, would not have mentioned the score — but Captain Dave revealed it during his after‑match speech.

The busy catering team produced a superb meal, and thanks were extended to them and to those on bar duty. Prizes were awarded to the Friends’ highest winning rink and Kings Langley’s top  rink, each receiving a tiny potted cactus — a fun and unusual token Carolyn is now known for.

During the after‑match speeches, Carolyn addressed the players, sharing the mission of the Friends and noting that twelve counties were represented among the visiting team. Although she didn’t play, she thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon alongside other supporters.

With the season drawing to a close, the Friends now look ahead to their final match of the year, taking place the following day at Croxley Green.
