Tewkesbury Bowling Club, the second oldest club in Gloucestershire, was bathed in sunshine when we arrived to be greeted by the club Chairman Stewart and Captain Malcolm, but a heavy shower arrived which happily stopped before the game started. However, apart from a light shower in the middle of the game, the rain stayed away and an excellent game was enjoyed in a beautiful setting with Tewkesbury Abbey in the background. The game was played in an excellent spirit with the Friends winning by 108 shots to 83 and by four rinks to two. The most successful Friends rink was Richard Pearce, Ian Whelpton, Don Butchers and Lindsay Bangs and Alex, Julie, Colin and Jan took the honours for Tewkesbury.
Following the game we were treated to an excellent meal prepared by the club with a wonderful strawberry sponge dessert made by one of the members.
The Club Captain Malcolm presented the winning rinks from each team with a reward for their efforts and thanked everyone for an enjoyable afternoon. The Friends Captain of the Day also rewarded the highest winning rinks and gave encouragement to those who had not been quite as successful. Tewkesbury’s team included ten year old Charlie, who played in a rink with his great uncle Rod and it was good to see the young man enjoy his afternoon.
The Friends team contained members from eleven counties, and Captain of the Day Graham gave a brief outline of the history of the Friends, who will celebrate their 20th Anniversary in 2025. As the Tewkesbury club will be celebrating their 200th Anniversary in 2028, he suggested that possibly we could make a return visit then to join in the celebrations.
A very enjoyable day at a very friendly club, thank you Tewkesbury for making us so welcome!
