Tuesday 27th August 2024
The National Championships at Victoria Park, Leamington Spa have been running now for 12 days, and today Friends challenge a BE select Team in their annual match. The weather, whilst a bit dull, was warm but blowy – thankfully not cold, like the previous weekend.
This year we began the game earlier to allow BE to fit in more Championship games after we had vacated the green. Players met on D Green, rinks and opponents were organised by the Captain’s of the Day, Mike Bertrand for the Friends and David Wigman for BE.
The rinks proved difficult with the wind blowing straight down the greens. By half way on the 9th end the Friends were holding their own and led 56 to 53, but BE had more success in the second half and won the game 118 to 96.
After the game we all made our way to the Irish Club for our after-game meal. BE President David King-Taylor was unable to attend having had recent surgery however Senior-Vice, Sheila Storey, took his place. Speeches from the Captains of the Day and BE Senior Vice President Sheila followed the meal. Sheila was keeping busy at this year’s Championships, and was looking forward to her Presidential year in 2025.
The raffle came next! prizes of which there were many, all donated by our members. We raised a magnificent £220 which will go join our donation fundings, supporting the great sport of lawn bowls.
Inevitably the time came for us all to depart, some of us returning home, others to their temporary homes whilst attending the Championships.
A great annual event, enjoyed by all.
