Friends take on Surrey Clubs

Thursday, 24 July 2025 — Cranleigh Bowls Club

Organised by Charlotte Emanuel, 2025 President of Surrey, this spirited match saw the Friends face rinks representing Surrey clubs from Hersham, Purley, Hook & Southborough, Wonersh, and Mitcham. A last-minute addition included a team featuring 13-year-old Frankie, bringing youthful energy to the greens.

The game commenced at midday, with Surrey Clubs remaining on their designated rinks while the Friends rotated every six ends — keeping bowlers on their toes throughout. The weather was largely kind, with a late cloudburst adding some light drama to the final stages.

Following the match, players were treated to a superb buffet in the clubhouse, complete with dessert and cheese and biscuits. Brief reports were given by Charlotte and Neil, and although the format introduced a touch of confusion regarding top rink distinctions, the achievements were celebrated with enthusiasm.

The top rink for the Friends featured Lesley Summersgill, Graham House, Marcia Dunstone, and Mike Skerry. For the Surrey Clubs, Hersham claimed top honours with Malcolm, Mel, Lesley, and Moira. The Friends emerged victorious with a score of 110–86, drawing from talent across nine counties.

To mark the occasion, Charlotte was presented with a commemorative certificate — a fitting tribute to a thoroughly enjoyable day of bowls and fellowship.
