Victory at Sawston BC then goodbye Cambridgeshire

The afternoon players – some are reserving their strength for the game!

This was the final stop on our three‑game visit to the Cambridge area. When we arrived at Sawston, the car park overlooked a very sun‑scorched cricket field, and the green itself was much like the others we’d seen on the trip — a patchwork of brown and green thanks to the hot weather. It made things a little tricky, but it certainly didn’t stop us having a good game.

We were greeted at the gate with raffle tickets, and inside the clubhouse more members welcomed us with filled rolls and very welcome refreshments. The match was set for 18 ends, with a hydration break at the halfway point. The Friends came out on top across all rinks, finishing with a strong overall win: 137–67. It was also great to see two of Sawston’s younger players taking part, including Oscar, who has represented Disability Bowls England.

After the game, the club served a lovely salad prepared by their members. Once we’d eaten, we thanked the catering team, the bar staff and the greenkeepers for all their hard work. Then came the presentations:

• Top rink for Sawston: Tracey, John G, Ollie and Dan
• Top rink for the Friends: Jenny, Ian, Richard and Trevor

Presentation to President Alan Arnold

The match was played as part of Sawston’s 100‑year anniversary celebrations, and we were delighted to present a framed certificate to President Alan Arnold to mark the occasion.

With that, it was time to head home — or, for those staying on another day in Cambridge, to find their lodgings and get ready for the journey back the following day.
