The Friends v Rock Park Bowling Club, Barnstable, Devon – August 2nd 2026
The second game arranged on our Devon Tour, was at Rock Park Bowling Club in Barnstable, North Devon. As with most of the country, the weather remained fine, and on arriving at the club we were met by Club Captain Ken Ellis who made us very welcome.
The Friends team were represented by 10 Counties from as far north as Lincolnshire and locally from Cornwall. The rinks were drawn, and it was found that the centre rinks were suffering from the recent draught and were very fast. However, the Friends were able to master the green and won by 5 rinks to 1 and a score of 106 – 83. After the game the cream teas were very welcome, with much discussion of the Devon or Cornwall way of spreading the jam and the cream on the scones.
After the meal, captain of the day, Neil, thanked Ken and President Dougie Cole for their hospitality, and wished them well on this their 91st anniversary. Top rink for the Friends of Leslie Summersgill, Ian Welpton, Simon Conway and Adie Booth received their prize, and the same was presented to the Rock Park top team of Mark Hannett, Brendan Sullivan, Lee Woodace and Tim Cooke. President Dougie then made a presentation of the raffle funds towards the Friends finances. The meeting came to an end with the presentation of the certificate commemorating the Friends visit.
