Thirty Years Celebrated at Byeways BC

Monday 3^rd August 2026

Another hot & humid day saw us visiting a relatively new club, Byeways at Fremington between Bideford and Barnstaple. We like to find out a little of the history of the places we visit, so I asked, why Byeways? Before the club and surrounding housing estate was built it was the site of a Nursery for the village. So they kept the name and the road leading to it became Byeways Close.

We were hosted by President Paul, Men’s Captain Shaun and Ladies Captain Vrony. The green, clubhouse and surrounding grounds were in immaculate condition and it was obvious that a lot of hard work had gone into preparing for their 30^th Anniversary year. There were two brand new cars advertising their sponsors, Toyota. A major achievement for a small bowling club.

The day got underway with the usual photograph and introductions. Thanks to Miranda for being our duty photographer for the day. We stopped play at nine ends for refreshments and completed the match with lots of time to spare before the meal was ready. It was a bit of a runaway for the Friends winning on five rinks but that did not dampen the home team’s spirit. It was very competitive right to the finish. We would not have had it any other way.

The ladies in the kitchen performed their usual miracles and we had a lovely meal of salad, new potatoes, ham and quiche followed by Eton mess.

Winning rink for the Friends was Anne, Liz, Neil and Trevor. Top for Byeways was John, Jenny, Debbie and Don. We had one losing rink so to help them recover for their next match I gave them a Boost, a chocolate one that is. They went to Colin, Trish, Adie(the other Adie) and Mike.

We were represented by ten counties on the day so thank you to everyone for being there. Congratulations to Byeways on your 30^th Anniversary.
