Supermarine BC – Game 20

Saturday, 16th July at Supermarine BC I arrived at the car park by Supermarine BC to find we were sharing it with a very well supported junior sporting event nearby.  The club members acting as marshals had our parking area roped off but once they saw i had no children in the car the rope was dropped and i was allowed in. After lunch we assembled around the green and Club Captain Mick Kilburn welcomed…

Oakley BC – Game 19

Monday 11th July at Oakley BC.  If you have never been to Oakley, you have missed a real treat.  It is in the middle of the countryside and only reachable through narrow twisting lanes, but once there it is well worth the effort to see the club in the Colman Estate (Colman’s mustard).  There is a big car park, a big bowls green and a smart clubhouse and changing rooms.  However, that is not all, you…

Alexandra BC – Game 17

Saturday 9th July – Friends at The Alexandra Bowling & Social Club, Portsmouth. On arrival at the club we were greeted by a wonderful array of colour from a multitude of hanging baskets, planters and flower beds.  They are tended by one single member of the club, Mrs. Jean Swan who is still very active in her 80th year.   Well done Jean, a spectacular achievement. We were kept well refreshed during the match with jugs…

Bristol St. Andrews BC – Game 15

Saturday 2nd July 2022,    Friends v Bristol St Andrew’s B.C. With most of the Friends team driving through heavy rain en route to Bristol, prospects for play looked unlikely, but as we arrived some very wet members of our hosts had just completed a competition and assured us that the green, though heavy, was playable.  The club vice-captain, Keith, beat a hasty retreat home to change into some dry clothes following his morning soaking,…

Saturday 25th June Friends of English Bowling visit Thame Bowls Club It was perfect weather for bowling, although the breeze was challenging at times, but nobody’s complaining!    There were nine counties representing Friends, and a very welcome and plentiful buffet lunch greeted us, supported by Janet and Wendy minding the bar.   Well, all good things come to an end, on to the game!! Henlow Park BC – Game 13

Sunday 19th June,  Henlow Park Bowls Club. Arriving at Henlow several bowlers from Bedfordshire had already played at other clubs in a local Bedfordshire Competition, so they were fully warmed up.  We were disappointed to learn that their President would not be in attendance as he and his wife had both caught Covid (it’s still about).  It was also a big disappointment for Bob Hirst, as he had been waiting 2 years for this game. …
