Saturday 27th July 2024 Tewkesbury Bowling Club, the second oldest club in Gloucestershire, was bathed in sunshine when we arrived to be greeted by the club Chairman Stewart and Captain Malcolm, but a heavy shower arrived which happily stopped before the game started. However, apart from a light shower in the middle of the game, the rain stayed away and an excellent game was enjoyed in a beautiful setting with Tewkesbury Abbey in the background….
We travelled as Friends, or BE players and supporters, from 14 different counties to West Bridgford to meet and play for the Ian Woodcock trophy, a beautiful cut glass claret jug which Ian, a former English Bowling president, donated to initiate our keenly contested match. Saturday 20th July 2024 My journey from Buckingham to Keyworth BC went well, the weather looked perfect for an afternoon of bowling, and at the clubhouse we received a warm welcome from President Richard and Captain Maurice. The Friends of English Bowling v Highworth BC, Wiltshire 15th July 2024 We arrived at Highworth for our celebration match to thick cloud and rain; we were warmly welcomed, and the rolls and cakes on offer to purchase for our lunch were much appreciated. Saturday 13th July ‘24 My route from home, on the satnav, appeared to be a straight line from Thame to Wantage vs a long curve via Oxford. I took the straight line. Mistake! Monday 24th June The final game of the Friends visit to the North-East, was to celebrate the 150th Anniversary year of Portland Bowling Club situated close to the centre of Newcastle. During its long history, Portland were originally members of the Scottish Bowling Association before the EBA was formed in 1903.
